A warm, sunny evening saw over 80 athletes at the recent Waimea Harrier Club Wednesday evening 5km series from the Eddyline in Richmond. Competition was fierce among the top contenders with the first 4 runners, Cameron Jones, Joel Bowater, Chris Sharland and Matt Jeans all finishing in under 20mins. A very strong field of walkers was lead home by Daryl Nish with another five walkers less than two minutes behind him.
Running conditions were also very good, despite impending rain, for the popular 6.5km ‘Panorama Drive’ race on Saturday, November 24. With a long hill climb, this is one of the more challenging of our summer runs, but that did not deter the 58 athletes who took part. Chris Sharland ran strongly to take out line honours in a very commendable time of 26.22 mins, with Dan Busch in second place just 30 secs behind him. Klaartjie van Schie led the woman’s field home in an equally impressive time of 28.07mins with Colette Read just over a minute behind her. The fastest male walker was Peter Hague, 43.52 mins, with Alan West 30secs behind him. Gillian McDougall was the fastest female walker, in 50.52mins, two minutes ahead of her nearest rival, Paddy Tarrant.
