For the next two Sundays, thanks to the Sports Fishing For Youth Trust, local children will have the opportunity to participate in a guided ‘fish out’ day at the specially-built Waimea River Park Fishing Ponds in Appleby.
The trust’s original objective in 2012 was to provide youth with an opportunity to go fishing, enjoy the outdoors, and to develop an appreciation of the outdoor environment.
Ian Kearney, chairman of Sports Fishing for Youth Trust says, “we believe the ponds are a great opportunity for children to experience outdoor activities.”
The event has successfully expanded over the last five years with over three hundred children attending last year. The Trust provides participants with the equipment and members of the public and of the Nelson Trout Fishing Club will act as guides to show the children how to use the equipment and how to fillet their catch.
Dates for guided fishing are April 15 and April 22. Participants will be given a one-hour time slot for one of the fishing days. All children must be registered at Fish and Game, call 5446382 or via their website

Spread the love.
