More than 200 local children embraced the local baseball programme on Wednesday, September 26, in a schools’ tee ball tournament.

Held at the region’s baseball diamonds at Champion Green in Stoke, the tournament saw 22 teams enter from schools around Tasman and Nelson.

The tournament came on the back of a Baseball in School’s programme run by local baseball club Nelson Heat and its head coach Marty Grant.

Marty says the in-school’s programme is a continuing success, with the day-long tournament an opportunity for the school children to test their new skills. Baseball is currently the fastest growing sport in New Zealand and this growth can also be seen locally, says Marty, with this the biggest tee ball competition seen in the region for some time. While the focus was on learning and fun at the tournament, Marty says scores were kept and winners announced.

Weekly tee ball begins in week one of term four, on Thursday afternoons, 4-5pm at Champion Green. Register at
