Queen of reality television Dame Julie Christie will reconnect with her fellow Coasters at Club Waimea on August 12, when she’ll be hosted as a guest speaker.

We’re thrilled to have her this year,” say organisers of the annual ex-West Coast get-togethers, Shona McLean and Murray Wieblitz.

The group was started when Geoff and the late Joan Patterson migrated from Greymouth in 2001. Together with Doug Stanton, the first get-together was a potluck do at Tahunanui Bowling Club that attracted nearly 160 Coasters.

Since then the annual get-togethers have evolved from afternoon teas to hosting guest speakers.

Julie was brought up one of nine in Greymouth, losing her father when she was five. She grew up and became a newspaper journalist before moving into television in the late 80’s, the start of an illustrious 30-year television career.

Involved with around 200 titles including Dragons Den, Changing Rooms, Treasure Island and the esteemed This is Your Life, in August last year Julie received her Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to governance and the television industry.

She’ll speak to the group on how growing up on the West Coast defined her success and why the coast needs its ex-pats to care.
