The first open track cycling carnival to be held on the Saxton Velodrome was run by the Tasman Wheelers Cycling Club on Saturday, May 26. The organisers were very pleased with the event and Nelson’s sunshine helped to make this a great showcase for local velodrome cycling.
This was NZ ‘s first-ever winter outdoor velodrome carnival race series and the Tasman Wheelers Cycling Club organisers are planning to stage bigger and better events in the summer.
The day’s events included five exciting open events with special carnival races such as Scratch races, the Keirin and the Miss ’n Out.
The A Grade events were dominated by the Wheeler’s flying machine Kaio Lart, identified as one of NZ’s young, great track racing talents.
Brett Grimwood showed great form and displayed some of his experienced track cycling skills to take out many top three placings.
The B grade event winners were very competitive with major placings see-sawing.
Roger Bates, Lisa Mann, Marty Campbell, Phillip Reardon and Charlotte Grimwood often battled it out up to the finishing line.
